Crossroads signage unveiling at the Old Barracks in Trenton

A musket salute and hearty huzzahs will mark the unveiling of new signage telling the story of Trenton’s Old Barracks on Wednesday, May 23 at 3:15 p.m. The marker, erected at 101 Barrack Street, is among the first to be put up in Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area’s statewide program to unify New Jersey’s Revolutionary War sites with a common visual brand.
The unveiling will be hosted by the board of the MIDJersey Chamber of Commerce, and will also include Crossroads trustees and staff, elected officials and members of New Jersey’s history community. The Old Barracks sign is part of a prominent and cohesive identity designed for the more than 200 Revolutionary War-related sites, with an eye toward driving visitorship and promoting New Jersey’s crucial role in the war.
“Heritage tourism is a key economic driver for New Jersey, the state’s extensive Revolutionary War history is an asset that’s yet to be used to its fullest extent,” said Crossroads Board Chair Ira Jersey. “Entrances to key state parks like Washington Crossing, Monmouth Battlefield and Princeton Battlefield are already branded with Crossroads signage, but there’s tremendous opportunity to unify local sites across the state with the common brand as Revolutionary heritage sites. We’re thrilled that the Old Barracks is taking the lead in joining our efforts with an interpretive marker that puts the site into context with New Jersey’s extensive contributions to the fight for independence.”
“The Old Barracks Association is proud to be identified with and by Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area,” said Old Barracks Museum Executive Director Richard Patterson. “We firmly believe that through Crossroads, efforts to promote New Jersey’s numerous Revolutionary assets as a premier heritage tourism destination of nationwide interest will greatly benefit the Barracks and our Revolutionary colleagues at sister sites. Linking all these historic sites and museums in the minds of the general public as a collective attraction is critical if we are to enjoy visitation comparable to other states and cities who have been more closely identified with the Revolution, when we have just as much and more!”
The Old Barracks signage is made possible by NJM Insurance Group of West Trenton and First Bank of Hamilton. With scores of Revolutionary-era historic sites located throughout New Jersey, there are many opportunities for businesses to sponsor signage in their own communities.
