March 28 at 7:30 pm
Robert Mayers presents “Searching for Yankee Doodle – Washington’s Soldiers in the American Revolution” during a meeting of the Mendham Borough Historical Society on Tuesday, March 28. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Garabrant Center, 4 Wilson Street, Mendham Borough; Mayers’ talk is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m.
Mayers explores the history of common soldiers, the embodiment of the American Revolution, what inspired them to endure the hardships, why they fought. It was a challenge for historians to expose the attitudes, behaviors and golden myths about these patriots. Were they a reality, wishful thinking, or both? Mayers evaluates diverse conceptions, Yankee Doodles’ lives before, during, after the war as evidenced in original military records and personal papers.
Descendant of a patriot soldier, author, and Revolutionary War historian, Mayers’ travels, research and family accounts shed light on people and places lost or neglected by history. He is a frequent presenter at and contributor to numerous historical societies, Navy/Marine vet, associated with Rutgers and Seton Hall. Public invited; parking/program free.
