“Groups with archival or museum collections in need of organization or preservation are invited to attend the Lunch and Learn session being sponsored by the Morris County Heritage Commission on Thursday, August 24, from 11 a.m. to noon. The session will be held at the Morris County Library, 30 East Hanover Avenue, Whippany. There is no charge for the workshop, but pre-registration by August 21, 2017 is required.
The workshop will introduce participants to two free programs available to non-profit organizations. The Caucus Archival Projects Evaluation Service (CAPES) is offered by the New Jersey Historical Commission. Non-profit organizations with collections of paper items such as manuscripts, books, photographs, maps, or postcards may be eligible to take advantage of the free CAPES assessment. The Artifact Assessment Program (AAP) is provided by the New Jersey Association of Museums. As with CAPES, an AAP consultant is available to visit participants’ sites to survey and evaluate the condition of artifacts.
Program presenters will include Debra Schiff, a CAPES consultant and archivist at the Chester Library; Eileen Stokes from the Washington Township Historical Society; and Peg Shultz, archivist and acting director at the Morris County Heritage Commission.
Ms. Schiff will discuss the importance and value of these programs to non-profit organizations. She will also take attendees through the application process. Ms. Stokes will share her experience with CAPES and the benefits reaped by the historical society and its museum, which holds a large collection of local history books, pamphlets, and maps. Ms. Shultz will talk about the importance of CAPES and AAP reports in the grant-writing process, and how they can positively influence grantors. The program will conclude with a question and answer session.
The workshop will be valuable to both non-profit history organizations and to other non-profit communities such as church groups, fraternal organizations, women’s clubs, veterans’ groups, and other groups with archives to protect.
