Soldiers at Fort Lee grabbed their muskets, dropped their supplies and marched off in haste thus escaping certain defeat and capture. The main body headed northwest to cross a new bridge over the Hackensack River (now New Bridge Landing) to safety while others fled to the Meadowlands salt marshes. A handful, too drunk to obey orders, were the only prisoners taken. General Washington left Hackensack to a temporary position of safety across the Hackensack River in what is now Englewood.
