The Revolution in New Jersey
The Leader:
George Washington spent one-quarter of his time as General leading troops in New Jersey.
The Moment:
The ‘10 Crucial Days’ of the Delaware Crossing, and the battles of Trenton and Princeton, proved to be the Turning Point of the Revolution.
The Most:
There were over 600 battles, skirmishes and acts of war in New Jersey; today there are over 150 historic sites to explore. No other state comes close.
The Hottest:
Temperatures at the Battle of Monmouth rose into the 90’s, making it the hottest (and largest) battle of the war.
The Coldest:
The first National Historic Park in the U.S. is Morristown, honoring the place where the army survived the coldest winter of the war.
The Last:
Of all the Governor’s Houses in the 13 colonies, only one still stands, in Perth Amboy, NJ.

November 1776: When the Revolution Came to Newark
Newark Public LibraryNewark Public Library, James Brown African American Room, 2nd floor Presenter: Timothy Crist
Featured Story
Ten Crucial Days
In December 1776 the Patriot cause seemed to be on its last legs. After suffering a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Long Island, George Washington’s Continental Army had been driven all the way across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania.
From December 25, 1776 to January 3, 1777 — a period of just ten days — Washington’s brave soldiers would win a series of victories at Trenton and Princeton that were glorious indeed. These Ten Crucial Days proved instrumental to rekindling Patriot morale and keeping the cause for American independence alive in the wake of early defeats.
