New Jersey is known as the “Crossroads of the American Revolution” due to its position between New York and Philadelphia, which made it an actual and ideological battlefield from 1776 to war’s end in 1783. The war for Independence was complex and wide-ranging. Citizens had to take sides, or try to remain neutral. Armies crossed back and forth. Countless acts of barely-documented violence took place. Today, there are over 150 historic sites that were witness to the many facets of this conflict.
Crossroads National Heritage Area is the only NHA exclusively devoted to telling the story of the Revolution. We help Americans and international visitors to better understand the birth of the United States and its lasting impact.
