Did you know the key to the Bastille hangs in the front hall of Mount Vernon? It was a gift to George Washington from the Marquis de Lafayette.
The Bergen County Historical Society will host its annual Calico Frolic on Saturday July 14th, which also happens to be Bastille Day, between 6:30pm and 9pm in the historic Steuben House at Historic New Bridge Landing.
The Marquis de Lafayette stopped at the Steuben House on his return visit to the New United States. The historical society has a chair in its collection reported to have been sat in by Lafayette on his return visit to the US when he visited Hackensack July 14, 1825.
Celebrating this unique French Connection the society and The Tricorne Dance Ensemble of Glen Rock under the direction of dance mistress Denise Piccino of Hawthorne invite the public to join them in and evening of dancing and music from the colonial period with an emphasis on French themes. Musical accompaniment for the night will be provided by Ridley and Anne Enslow on the fiddle and hammered dulcimer. Refreshments and lemonade will also be served.
Admission for the evening is $15 for non-members and $12 for BCHS members. Late 18th and early 19th century period dress is welcome but not required. For additional information visit the society’s website, email at [email protected], or call 201-343-9492 and leave a message.
