Hessian Savages, Frog-Eating Frenchmen, and Palatine Boors: How Personal Encounters Change Time-Honored Perceptions

Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Bergen County Historical Society hosts historian and lecturer Robert A. Selig at the Steuben House at Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge.

Americans struggled with the question of how to deal with the foreigners the American War of Independence brought to their country, both the Hessian soldiers hired by England as well as the Germans arriving with the French Army in 1780. These troops in turn had neither training nor experience on how to react to the various ethnic groups already living in the nascent United States uprooted by the war. In the course of that war, however, personal contacts eroded, at least in the short term, decades-old as well as more recent prejudices toward these, mostly German, foreigners to the degree that thousands elected to desert and remain in America.
