Old Dutch New Year First Day Hike: Jerseyman’s New Year in Virginia, 1774

Enjoy an afternoon walk along Somerville’s Peters Brook Greenway and Main Street. Along the way we read passages from the Journal of Philip Vickers Fithian for a Jerseyman in Virginia’s account of New Year’s Day 1774, unknowingly on the eve of the American Revolution.

Wear sturdy footgear and dress for the weather. Bring water and snacks.

N.J. Department of Environmental Protection offers First Day Hikes across State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites as part of a nationwide initiative of America’s State Parks.
