Keeping Time: New Jersey Musical Clocks

$35On Wednesday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m., step back in time for Keeping Time: New Jersey Musical Clocks, an evening featuring the popular music of 18th and 19th century New Jersey tall case clocks seen in Morven’s special exhibition Striking Beauty. Join the Practitioners of Musick as they explore the history and design of these musical timepieces accompanied by members of the vocal ensemble Mostly Motets performing the melodies discussed.
Tickets are $35 General Admission, $25 for Morven Members and Students. Tickets include a visit to Morven’s newest exhibition, Striking Beauty: New Jersey Tall Case Clocks, 1730 – 1830, prior to the program. Light refreshments will be provided.
The first exhibition of its kind, Striking Beauty celebrates the ingenuity of New Jersey clock makers and features over 50 tall case clocks from private and public collections. Clocks are on view from New Jersey cities and towns such New Brunswick, Elizabeth, Newark, Trenton, and Princeton. These freestanding pendulum clocks, all marvels of exquisite cabinetry, are as functional as beautiful with faces made of intricate brass work or painted designs of objects like ships, suns, and moons. Offered on a monthly basis, docent-led tours of Striking Beauty will take visitors through the history, creation, and legacy of these beautiful timepieces, exploring the stories of New Jersey clockmakers along the way. Tours are scheduled for the third Thursday of each month, at 2:00 p.m.: September 21, October 19, November 16, January 18, and February 15. Tours are limited to 10 people. Pre-registration is required. Tickets include access to visit Morven’s first floor permanent exhibition about the history of the site.
