The Washington Association of New Jersey (WANJ) was founded to care for the Ford Mansion (Washington’s Headquarters 1779-1780) in Morristown which was bought at auction from Ford family descendants. Since donating the Ford Mansion to the National Parks in 1933, the WANJ has continued as the “friends organization” for Morristown National Historical Park.
Each year since 1887, a distinguished scholar or political leader has presented an Annual Address. The speakers have included: Woodrow Wilson, Douglas Southall Freeman, and most recently, Governor Thomas Kean.
This year’s speaker is Niall O’Dowd. His new book, George Washington and the Irish: Incredible Stories of the Irish Spies, Soldiers, and Workers Who Helped Free America will be released that month and available for sale at the event. Niall O’Dowd, a history graduate of University College Dublin, is a native of Tipperary, Ireland who emigrated to the United States in 1979. He started his first newspaper in San Francisco in 1980 and is the Founder and Editor of Irish Voice Newspaper, Irish America Magazine, and IrishCentral.com the largest Irish media site outside Ireland with 3 million monthly users.
O’Dowd played a major role in the Irish Peace Process acting on behalf of the Clinton White House as chief negotiator with Sinn Fein and the IRA. His role was the subject of a book ‘Daring Diplomacy’ which was also covered as a PBS documentary and a Washington Post Magazine article. He also received an honorary degree from University College Dublin for his work as well as Ireland’s greatest Diaspora award the ‘Presidential Distinguished Services Award.’ He has written five books, ‘An Irish Voice’, a Memoir, ‘Fire in the Morning’ about the Irish at the World Trade Center on September 11, which was a number one bestseller in Ireland, ‘Lincoln and the Irish the Untold Story ‘which is just being re-released in paperback and ‘A New Ireland ‘about recent transformational changes in Irish society. Based on the major success with the Lincoln and the Irish book he began researching George Washington and the Irish which is being released this month.
