This February 22, George Washington turns 284 years old! Our First President did many great things, and we celebrate him in our everyday life – just look at any $1 bill! This year, the Old Barracks Museum invites all students in 4th and 5th grade to celebrate George Washington’s birthday through a drawing contest – and the lucky winners will even be invited to share some birthday cake with the Father of Our Country!
Picture Prompt
There are many iconic moments in George Washington’s life that come to mind when we think of him. Create a drawing depicting what you think is the greatest moment in George’s life. Submit 3-5 sentences explaining why you chose the scene and what makes it his greatest moment.
How to Enter
- Contest is open to all 4th and 5th grade students in New Jersey.
- All entries must be received by mail by February 5, 2016.
- Essays must be submitted by a parent, guardian, or teacher. They must be accompanied with the following information:
- Student’s and parent/guardian’s full name, address, email, and phone number
- Student’s grade (or equivalent grade if home schooled)
- Student’s school and teacher address and contact info, if submitted by teacher.
- Drawings must be on paper between 8.5×11” and 11×17”. Accompany description can be either typed or hand written. Submissions must be mailed to Old Barracks Museum, Attn: Washington Contest, 101 Barrack Street, Trenton, NJ 08608.
- Entries will not be returned. By entering the Contest, contestants agree to abide by these rules, and represent and warrant that the entries are their own and original creations, and do not violate or infringe the rights, including, without limitation, copyrights, trademark rights or rights of publicity/privacy, of any third party.
- Entries are void if they are in whole or in part illegible, incomplete, or damaged. No responsibility is assumed for late, lost, damaged, incomplete, illegible, postage due or misdirected mail entries.
Judging
The essays will be judged by 4 employees of the Old Barracks Association, based on content, style, originality, and grammar. Winners will be notified by phone and/or mail by February 10, 2016.
Prizes
Two students from each grade (4 & 5) will be selected as winners. The winners and their immediate families will be invited to the Old Barracks Museum on Saturday, February 20, 2016 to share George Washington’s birthday cake and meet with the man himself. Winners and their immediate families will also be given complimentary tours of the Old Barracks Museum. No cash substitution or transfer of the prizes will be allowed.
