On Sunday, October 29, “Eeric” Nelsen will lead a guided hike meeting at 5:30 PM at the historic Kearney House at Alpine Picnic Area & Boat Basin, accessible from the park’s Alpine entrance at PIP Exit 2. The hike covers a round-trip distance of about 3 miles in around 2 hours and is rated moderate by the hike leader. Participants should bring flashlights.
One of the park’s most popular hikes, the “Hallowe’en Hike” will leave the historic Kearney House as daylight begins to dim and head north along the Shore Trail. In keeping with what is said to be the time of year when “the veil between the living and the dead is stretched thin,” hikers will pass through quiet park land that was once alive with riverfront settlements, excursion groves … and a “bone factory” … before continuing on a rocky portion of the trail along the river, just as night begins to descend. As lights across the river appear in the darkness, the groupwill return through the woods and along the upper portion of the Shore Trail.
