Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge – Basking Ridge, NJ

road-to-morristown-imageAlong with the elevated position of Morristown protected by the Watchung Mountain range, the Great Swamp provided a natural defensive barrier that kept the enemy at bay. The Great Swamp supplied an abundance of resources to aid the Continental Army in surviving through the winter of 1777 and the historically brutal winter encampment of 1779-1780. Today the Great Swamp is a National Wildlife Refuge that was preserved in the 1960s, an action that prevented the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from building an airport on these lands.
