Rev. John Frelinghuysen first built this house in 1751. Three years later, after his death, Freylinghuysen was succeeded by Rev. Jacob Hardenbergh who became the first President of Queen’s College, now known as Rutgers University. In addition, Hardenbergh served in the Provincial Congress of New Jersey, as well as serving as a go-between during the war, maintaining
good relations between the army and the local residents. In 1907, the home
was moved to its present location, next to the Wallace House in Somerville.
