All the cannon positioned for the defense of Fort lee were abandoned by the Continental Army in their hasty retreat from the impending British attack. Forewarned of the approaching Cornwallis on November 20, the Americans fled, leaving behind 50 cannon, their tents, hundreds of barrels of flour, ammunition and more were abandoned at Fort Lee.
