The story of Washington Crossing Park and America’s 250th Birthday

August 7 @ 12:15 pm

$20

The Kiwanis Club of Trenton welcomes Annette C. Earling, Executive Director of the Washington Crossing Park Association to its next meeting on August 7, 2024 to hear the compelling story of the 1,200 acre park on the banks of the Delaware just a few miles north of Trenton which was the site of Washington’s famous crossing on Christmas night in 1776.  The program begins at 12:15 pm in Leonardo’s II restaurant. All are welcome to attend.

Landing at Johnson’s Ferry, the Continental Army marched nine miles through a fierce winter storm to Trenton, where the Americans captured over 900 Hessian mercenaries to secure a victory that changed the course of world history. With meadows, woodlands, and 13 miles of trails, as well as campsites, a nature center, an astronomical observation center, an open-air theater, picnic facilities, and a world-class collection of Revolutionary War artifacts, the park has enormous potential to enhance the entire community, particularly its youth and the elders who make use of the park’s programs. As a close neighbor to Trenton, the Association members feel a special responsibility to that city’s children and seeks to create recreational and educational programs that will nourish their love of both American history and their natural environment. The Park is currently preparing for its celebration of the nation’s 250th  birthday – its “semiquincentennial” – in 2026.

Founded in 1918, the Kiwanis Club’s programs have supported children’s services, community events and since 1955, the Times-Kiwanis Camp Fund, which has raised over $2 million for summer camp experiences for Trenton children.  In addition to the ongoing Camp Fund, current Kiwanis initiatives include “Vision Trenton,” a collaborative community effort to stimulate economic redevelopment by promoting Trenton’s extensive historic assets.

Leonardo’s II is located at 2021 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Lunch will be available off the menu for $20 per attendee.   Please RSVP by August 6, 2024, by contacting Alex Treece at [email protected]
