Firearm – Fort Lee Historic Park – Fort Lee, NJ.

Soldiers at Fort Lee grabbed their muskets, dropped their supplies and marched off in haste thus escaping certain defeat and capture. The main body headed northwest to cross a new bridge over the Hackensack River (now New Bridge Landing) to safety while others fled to the Meadowlands salt marshes. A handful, too drunk to obey orders, were the only prisoners taken. General Washington left Hackensack to a temporary position of safety across the Hackensack River in what is now Englewood.
