Zabriskie-Steuben House – New Bridge Landing – River Edge, NJ

2010-Crossroads-Image-Library-011-1280x850-e1357706441204

This Dutch sandstone dwelling served many purposes during the Revolution because of its strategic location. Located at the foot of the New Bridge, a pivotal crossing of the Hackensack River, where General George Washington led his troops in retreat from British forces the Steuben House bore silent witness to many Revolutionary War events. The house was confiscated from a New Jersey loyalist, Jan Zabriskie and was presented to Major General von Steuben in recognition of his service as inspector general of the Continental Army in 1783 by the State of New Jersey.
