Heritage Partner of the Week: Metuchen-Edison Historical Society

This week’s featured Heritage Partner is the Metuchen-Edison Historical Society. Their mission is to stimulate and promote an interest in and an appreciation of the history of the geographic area in and around the Borough of Metuchen and the Township of Edison in the County of Middlesex, New Jersey. To fulfill this mission, the Society fosters the creation, collection, preservation, and maintenance of physical material related to the history of Metuchen and Edison, makes the material available to the public in various formats, and increases public awareness of this history.

The Society maintains a collection of over 3,000 photographs, negatives, slides, manuscripts and artifacts about their local history in an archive located in the Grimstead room of the Metuchen Library.

Every February they sponsor Metuchen-Edison Local Day where they display items from the archives. They also sponsor historical programs with guest speakers 6 times a year, and often take field trips to nearby historic sites.

The Society also finds the time to maintain the Colonial Metuchen Cemetery that houses a monument to the Revolutionary War Soldiers that are buried there.
